(Mexico) #### The Vampire Family — Origin Story I was born in Mexico City to a lineage of relentless hard workers. We were what I call a 'vampire family'—working Mexican hours from before the sunrise until well after the sun set, meaning there was always a lot of work in the household. Because of this, I was raised by my grandparents, experiencing what I now call 'financial parentlessness.' My family provided me with the best education they could afford, and thanks to that, I've been able to do amazing things. At the same time, I missed my parents. They weren't very present because they were working all the time. But they taught me relentlessness: to never give up, to push forward, to hustle, and to work long hours. #### Business as a Tool to Help — The Why I strongly considered becoming a doctor or a therapist. I wanted to help people. But I chose to study International Business because I realized the power of scale. A doctor can help one patient at a time, but a healthy business is preventive medicine for society. It provides income, leadership, and stability for dozens of families at once. I saw entrepreneurship as a vehicle to impact lives on a much larger scale. #### Spreadsheets as My Canvas — Financial Artist I wanted to be an entrepreneur because, deep down, I wanted to be a present father and husband. I remember pitching my early business ideas to my family, and they would consistently shut them down, saying, 'Your financials are weak.' I took that personally. To prove them wrong, I paid for my Master's in Finance and became really good at building financial models. Spreadsheets became my canvas, and I became a financial artist. Fun fact: after my Master's, I pitched my ideas to them again. This time they said, 'Your financials are great, but we don't have money to invest in your business.' #### The Unexpected CEO — Coffee Empire A professor from my Master's program referred me to a coffee company. It wasn't just any local shop; it's one of the most famous coffee companies in Mexico, existing even before Mexico became independent from Spain. I walked in thinking I was interviewing for a manager role, but I walked out hired as the CEO. When I started, the company was moving 200 kilograms of coffee a month. Over four years, I applied everything I knew at the time, relying heavily on creativity and scrappiness. By the time I left, we had scaled to 20,000 kilograms a month. #### A Fork in the Pathway — The Leap Our massive growth caught the attention of the coffee producers. They offered me a multi-million dollar opportunity: a 50/50 partnership to scale further, requiring zero capital from me—just my knowledge, execution, and know-how. At the exact same time, my Canadian residency papers finally arrived. I was holding a golden ticket in one hand and an absolute unknown in the other. My ultimate test was my future self. I imagined myself at 60 years old and wondered if I would feel regret if I didn't take the leap. Because of that, I walked away from a great opportunity, boarded a plane in March 2010, and chose the unknown. ### Era: Crash — The Immigrant Reality: Starting from Zero. (Immigrant Reality) #### The Reality Check — Starting Over When I first landed in Canada, I'll admit, I was cocky. I thought Canada was very lucky to have me, and that within a year, I'd probably be the Prime Minister. But reality hit hard. Nobody knew me, I had no friends or family here, and nobody cared what I had done back in Mexico. I tried to start a coffee business—failed. I tried applying for jobs matching my experience—rejected. For my first five years, I worked survival jobs. I never thought it would take that long. I experienced a complete identity crash. I felt like a failure and literally couldn't recognize the man in the mirror. #### The Accidental Mentor — Birth of Unstoppable Me I was at a networking event when someone came up to me and said, 'Miguel, after talking to you for 20 minutes, I have learned more about Canada than in my last two years here. Could you be my mentor?' I laughed and thought, 'I can't be your mentor, I'm a total failure right now. You should find someone who has done something interesting.' But I agreed anyway. The next weekend, two people showed up. Then four. Then eight, sixteen, and eventually forty. We kept getting kicked out of coffee shops because there were too many of us. That was the birth of Unstoppable Me—a volunteer, peer-to-peer organization helping each other find meaningful employment faster. I dedicated 10 years of my life to that community. ### Era: Climb — From Bank Teller to Billion-Dollar Portfolio. (Self-Made Man) #### Canadian First — Getting In The Door It took me almost six years to land my first 'professional' job in Canada. To put that into perspective: I actually became a Canadian citizen before I even got a job in my field. I finally got my foot in the door working as a bank teller. I hustled and was quickly promoted to a financial advisor. But the real turning point happened when a friend believed in me and helped me land a role as a Junior Project Manager. That was the pivot that changed everything. #### Scaling the Bank — The Big Stage From that junior role, I started to grow fast. I became an analyst for savings accounts across Canada, modeling prices and behaviors for a $78 billion portfolio. Eventually, I was promoted to Product Manager for a $26 billion wealth segment at TD Bank. I went from serving coffee and working survival jobs to presenting on stage at TD Bank in front of over 500 people, almost like a TED Talk. #### The Peak and The Lighthouse — A New Chapter My banking career peaked when I moved to Scotiabank, becoming a Senior Product Manager overseeing a $52 billion portfolio of all the savings accounts in Canada. On paper, I had reached the top of the mountain. But the most important milestones had nothing to do with finance. Just before the pandemic, I met Jen, the love of my life. And during the pandemic, I became a father for the first time. My entire worldview was about to shift. ### Era: Awakening — The Bitcoin Rabbit Hole and Digital Sovereignty. (Down the Rabbit Hole) #### The Dream That Changed Everything — The Bitcoin Moment Becoming a father changed everything. I started waking up with anxiety, wondering, 'How is my boy ever going to afford groceries, buy a house, or get married in this economy?' Then, I had a dream. In the dream, my son was a teenager, and we were debating finance. He looked at me and asked, 'Dad, you were there when Bitcoin started. Why didn't you do anything about it?' I answered like a banker: 'Because it's evil, it's for criminals, it's too volatile.' My son just looked at me and said, 'Dad, I know you. And you didn't do your homework.' I woke up feeling like somebody had punched me in the gut. I became a madman studying the topic, trying to prove to my son that Bitcoin was bad. But the more I learned, the more the math proved me wrong, and the more I changed. #### I Thought I Knew Money — Humbled I thought I knew what money was. I had a Master's in Finance and 12 years of experience in the highest levels of Canadian banking, managing billions of dollars. But the truth is, I didn't truly understand money until I learned about Bitcoin. I started going to local meetups and saw everyday people with zero financial background who understood the mechanics of money, inflation, and sovereignty far better than the banking executives managing millions. It was incredibly humbling. #### The Zombie and The Prayer — The Pivot I started to feel like a zombie in my own life. I wasn't sure if I was dead or alive. In my family world, I was incredibly happy, but in my profession, I was completely dead inside. I was spending my days doing things I no longer believed in, propping up traditional banking systems. The more I learned about Bitcoin, the more I changed, and the more I felt the desperate need to build something real. So, when the corporate restructuring came and I was packaged out, I didn't see it as a loss. It was an absolute answer to my prayers. It was finally time for me to pivot into my true passions—living an intentional life, working in my zone of genius (my Ikigai), and focusing entirely on Bitcoin and AI, which I see as the ultimate amplifiers of humanity. ### Era: Now — Bitcoin, AI, and Building with Purpose. (Current Build) #### Generation Bitcoin — Building the Future My focus is now entirely on the future. I am deeply interested in building technology and resources for 'Bitcoin Parents'—families who are navigating this massive financial transition and want to build generational sovereignty. To help have these crucial conversations, we launched the Bitcoin After All podcast, and we are actively building the Generation Bitcoin ecosystem. My mission is to ensure no parent ever has to look their kid in the eye and say, 'I didn't do my homework.' #### The Bitcoin Sherpa — Guiding the Way I realized that the biggest barrier to adoption isn't just the technology; it's the lack of a personalized map. I became a 'Bitcoin Sherpa,' volunteering my time to help other grassroots Bitcoin organizations scale and grow. I am currently conducting deep user research to decode the 'path to conviction'—analyzing how people transition from skepticism to understanding. My goal is to engineer those 'Aha!' moments so we can help everyday people learn about Bitcoin faster and with much less friction. #### The Bitcoin Standard — Building the Rails To truly support the ecosystem, I stepped into the role of Director of Product for BitBooks. We are an accounting engine specifically designed for Bitcoin companies. Traditional financial rails don't know how to handle the future of money, so we are literally building the financial operating system for the Bitcoin standard, allowing founders to focus on building rather than fighting with legacy accounting. #### I Pay You to Learn AI — The AI Coach Alongside Bitcoin, AI is the greatest amplifier of human potential I have ever seen. I've been doing AI coaching for business owners, helping them implement systems that save time and scale their operations. My pitch is simple: I essentially pay you to learn AI. By working together and learning these tools, I guarantee that we are going to find more money, save more time, or make more money for your business. ## Testimonials ### Diana Lasso — Senior Manager Strategy & Transformation LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/diana-lasso/ My biggest takeaway from the Mentoring Program has been the incredible impact of having Miguel Abascal as my mentor. It was just a month, however, it boosted my confidence in a way that is hard to believe, but that can be perceived by everyone around me. Thanks to Miguel, I have shown that I can be the best version of myself not only in my training but also - and more importantly - in my career. I must confess that some of his anecdotes and analogies have resonated tremendously with me, as a Hispanic myself. His storytelling incorporates past challenges faced by many of us, while providing practical tools that can serve us to thrive through these. During his last Mailbag answered live event, he mentioned something that is genuinely altering my approach as a job seeker. He described the notion of how a job, after it gets created, gets socialized among hiring managers and their colleagues, and how these opportunities can be 'intercepted' during these early stages through honest, meaningful and well-taken care of relationships. As I navigate the incredibly competitive current state of the job market, I thank Miguel for, in many ways, being a light at the end of this tunnel which can be a very daunting and discouraging process for many. ### Maria Becerra — AI Business Strategist LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariaf-becerra I came across this podcast thanks to Miguel, the host, and was invited to one of the episodes. After listening to a few of the interviews, I just couldn't stop thinking how I wished I could have had access to this information before coming here to Canada. I hope many newcomers can listen to these stories and learn from our failures so they don't have to repeat them. Remember you don't have to go through our same mistakes. Learn from us. ### Katya Ramos — Senior Analytics Manager LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katyaramos-barrios/ Miguel thank you for sharing this videos with so inspirational stories. His Mission is bold, 'To make Canada Under-employment Free' The magic words 'Community, Networking & Mentoring' ### Holly Holmes — Owner and Grant Writer at Language Artisan LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hollyhlanguageartisan/ I discovered your podcast, oddly enough, while researching a company before an interview with an important contract. Getting to know the company through your conversation with one of its employees really helped me understand what the company was all about. The interview was engaging, made me laugh, and really touched me. As a newcomer myself, I really identified with the situations you both talked about. I felt calm and relaxed in my interview--and got the contract! Weird but true, so thank you very much! ### Tarun Kumar — Post Grad Student in Centennial College LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/r-tarunkumar/ Being the very first networking session I have attended, I got many worth full insights from Miguel during our one-on-one session on how to maintain a connection with our network. ### Sai Satwik Bolisetti — Data Analyst LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sai-satwik-bolisetti/ This session helped me understand how to steer the wheel in a short period conversations or coffee connects. ### Kritika Bharadwaj — Strategic Communications Specialist LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kritika-bharadwaj/ As immigrant professionals we have so much in common regarding our experiences and challenges after moving to Canada - regardless of our diverse cultural backgrounds. This means it is important to connect regularly with each other to support our goals. ### Zoheb Hasan Ali — HR Digital Transformation LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zohebhasanali/ What I took from the session: The importance of structuring the conversation, making a personal connection and being curious about the other person. ### Tanush Sharma — Research and Market Analyst LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tanushsharma The session was not only about theory but implications of the theory. ### Syed Umair — Product Leader LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/smumair/ Make the process as natural as possible. But alongside we have to be more intentional and planned. I love the tip around setting up reminders in calendar to keep in touch with people. ### David Almeida — B2B Tech Sales LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dalmeida1/ Keeping your connections 'warm' - keep regular contact with them to maintain (and ideally grow) the relationship. This makes it significantly easier if/when you need their help with something (or vice versa!) ### Sakshi Shah — Software Developer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sakshishah6/ That you have to treat networking much like a relationship, you have to ask the person questions about themselves, get to know them, and keep in touch. And try to provide them with value as well. ### Rita-Maria Oladokun — Full-stack (software) engineer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rita-maria-oladokun/ The biggest takeaway for me is that networking is ideally a long-term game. If you're constrained for time because you're job hunting to have money to pay bills, your interactions with your connections will feel very transactional. Miguel emphasized that we should focus on building meaningful relationships with our connections. ### Rafi Khan — Experienced Sales Professional LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rafi-khan-vanc/ I learned how to add value to the people we are networking with. ### Gabriel Cabrera Marquez — Business Strategy | Governance, Risk and Compliance LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielcabreram/ My biggest AHA moment: Focus on offering value. ### Pamela B. — Project Manager | Account Manager LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamelabuccio/ Coffee Chat Ready has been a HUGE help in my job search! As someone who's been in the marketing world for a bit, I know how important networking is, but actually putting myself out there always felt awkward. Coffee Chat Ready helps me express my experience and projects in a way that feels natural and engaging. I've been experimenting with different intros for different people, and it's definitely helped me have more engaging conversations. Even though I'm still figuring out the best approach, Coffee Chat Ready has given me a much-needed boost of confidence. It's like having a networking coach in your pocket, always there to help me put my best foot forward! ### Philip T. — IT Technical Support LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-tam/ Finding Coffee Chat Ready has been great for me. As someone who's always struggled with networking, it's been tough to put myself out there and actually practice talking to professionals. Coffee Chat Ready takes the awkwardness out of it! I get matched with someone new each time, and it's way less nerve-wracking than trying to find people myself. I've only had a couple of chats so far, but I already feel more confident talking about my career goals and experience. Overall, though, Coffee Chat Ready is a great tool for anyone who wants to improve their networking skills and build their confidence. It's definitely helped me feel more prepared to take the next step in my career. ### Fatemeh A — Public Relations | Marketing LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fatemeh-asgari-azad/ I recently had a coffee chat practice session through Coffee Chat Ready, and afterwards, Miguel sent me incredibly detailed feedback. I was blown away! He pointed out things I did well, but also helped me see some blind spots I need to work on. Honestly, I feel like I have a much better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to networking now. I can already tell this is going to make a big difference as I connect with more people. Thank you, Miguel and Coffee Chat Ready, for such personalized support! ### Robin G. — Product Manager LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robingittens/ Continually practicing Coffee Chats with community of job seekers has significantly boosted my confidence and mindset towards networking. What once felt onerous and draining, now feels exciting and engaging. Before this experience I would have never thought of crafting curiosity-driven presentation to present and help guide the flow of these 20 to 30 minute virtual meetings. Coffee Chat Ready has shown tremendous potential while basking in its infancy. It's inspiring to be connected with a team who's passionate about helping others become a better version of themselves. ### Eliany R. — Architectural Designer | LEED G.A. LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elianyrodriguez/ Coffee Chat Ready is an excellent initiative for leveling up your coffee chat skills. Networking can be challenging, especially since it's not something typically taught, but this program provides a supportive environment to practice in a low-pressure environment. Miguel's feedback is very valuable, helping participants identify areas for improvement and refine their approach. I appreciate the opportunity to connect with professionals from various industries and look forward to the new connections this platform will bring! ## Resource Library - Professional Immigrant Networks Directory [Directory] — themes: Networking, Newcomer Resources, Personal Brand This is a test for a short Description, here is why I recommended a lot. - Value for Value Mentoring Session with Miguel Abascal [Document] — themes: Networking, Newcomer Resources, Personal Brand - The Ultimate Mentorship Directory [Directory] — themes: Mentoring - Power Strategies on Self-Promotion & Unpacking Your International Experience & Transferrable Skills [Video] — themes: Personal Brand - Nail Your Next Interview: Mock Interview Event!
